Senior researcher and professor/associate professor in machine learning for medical genetics

Offentlig forvaltning

Senior researcher and professor/associate professor in machine learning for medical genetics and precision medicine – Section for Research and Development, OUS / Department of Medical Genetics, UiO and Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, UiO.

A permanent position (100 %) as senior researcher is available at Division of Laboratory Medicine/Department of Medical Genetics, Oslo University Hospital, (Section for Research and Development). The position is combined with an additional 20 % part time position as Professor or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications, at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, UiO. It is required that the position holder attends to both positions.

We are looking for a researcher in machine learning with scientific interest and experience in medical genetics and/or precision medicine.
Diagnostic routines based on Next Generation DNA sequencing (NGS) are developing fast but are challenged by the deluge in data. There is a need to understand how predictive tools and prioritization algorithms can be effectively incorporated into data analysis work flows. Nowadays genetic diagnostic tests in patients with monogenic disorders use NGS-technologies for whole exome/genome sequencing (WES/WGS). These tests result in a molecular diagnosis in <50% of the patients, yielding a large number of variants of unknown significance underlining the strong need to improve the diagnostic offer for these patients.

Medical genetics is an exciting field experiencing a vivid scientific development, with implementation of new, groundbreaking technologies for exploring the patients’ genes as a basis for personalized medicine, also known as precision medicine. Department of Medical Genetics plays a central part in the Norwegian health care system. During the COVID pandemic we sequenced 80.000 covid genomes. Yearly, we generate around 5000 whole genome sequences as part of diagnosing patients with a wide array of hereditary diseases.

We want a motivated researcher across the field of machine learning and neighboring disciplines (data science, statistics, computational biology) to complement the Department’s research activities. An especially important task will be to facilitate integration of Artificial intelligence (AI) predictions with more clinical research applications, utilize and develop novel AI-based prediction tools for variant interpretation outside the known morbid genes and in ncDNA, and implement diagnostic pipelines to improve our locally produced advanced decision support software (ELLA, https://allel.es/). The holder of the position will also play an important part in strengthening the interdisciplinary collaboration with other groups and sections at the Department (group of digital solutions for medical genetics and Section for Laboratory Diagnostics.

Kvalifikasjoner:

  • Scientific qualifications at PhD level or higher in machine learning, or in data science, statistics or mathematics with documented competence in machine learning.
  • Scientific interests and experience in medical genetics, molecular biology, computational biology and/or precision medicine.
  • Excellent skills in computer programming.
  • High professional and strategic research ambitions.
  • Personal aptitude.
  • Good communication skills in written and oral English is a prerequisite for performing all tasks associated with the position. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two/three years subsequent to their appointment.

Personlige egenskaper:

Department of Medical Genetics at Oslo University Hospital (https://oslo-universitetssykehus.no/avdelinger/klinikk-for-laboratoriemedisin/avdeling-for-medisinsk-genetikk) consists of five sections: Section for Clinical Genetics, Section for Hereditary Cancer, Section for Laboratory Diagnostics, Section for Quality and Section for Research and Development (https://www.ous-research.no/home/meg/home/6629). The department hosts the Norwegian research infrastructure "Norwegian Consortium for Sequencing and Personalized Medicine" (www.norseq.org), a national research infrastructure offering sequencing services on the full range of sequencing instruments from Illumina, as well as the Sequel IIe and Revio from Pacific Biosciences.Section of Research and Development (approximately 70 employees) consists of researchers, postdoctoral fellows and PhD candidates, as well as students and technical staff. We offer a modern and enthusiastic research environment in the field of medical genetics of a specter of diseases (cancer, autoimmunity, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, infectious diseases). The researchers in the Department collaborate with research environments within the hospital/university, and with other Norwegian and international institutions. Department of Medical Genetics plays a central part in the Norwegian health care system. During the COVID pandemic we sequenced 80.000 covid genomes. Yearly, we generate around 5000 whole genome sequences as part of diagnosing patients with a wide array of hereditary diseases.

The Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE) is a joint department of UiO and OUS. OCBE has expanded considerably during the last decade, becoming one of Europe's most active biostatistics and epidemiology groups. Currently, OCBE includes ten tenured professors and associate professors, fifteen tenured researchers, and many postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and visiting scientists, making up a group of over 80 researchers. OCBE’s research is internationally recognized, in particular in the areas of time-to-event models and causal inference; epidemiology of lifestyle, chronic diseases and infectious disease; methods for highdimensional models and data integration, especially in molecular medicine; mathematical modelling of cancer; probabilistic modelling and Bayesian inference, stochastic algorithms and simulation-based inference; and statistical machine learning. OCBE has numerous collaborations with leading bio-medical research groups in Norway and internationally. In the last national research evaluation, OCBE was judged as excellent. OCBE has acquired major research funding from the Norwegian Research Council, the European Union, the Nordic Research Council, the Norwegian Cancer Society and several other public and private agencies. OCBE has a leading role in two centres of excellence, INTEGREAT and BigInsight, and hosts one ERC Advanced Grant. During Covid, OCBE had a major role in the national management of the pandemics.
