Environmental Expert, Polar & Climate Programme, Temporary Position

GRID-Arendal is seeking a dynamic and committed environmental expert with solid experience related to environmental management and/or climate change to join its Polar and Climate Programme.

As an Expert, you will have the ability to both initiate and support the development and implementation of our projects in this programme area.

As part of a small team within GRID-Arendal, you will be expected to have experience in one or more thematic areas, which could include climate change and adaptation, sustainable development, waste and pollution, spatial planning, disaster risk reduction, and biodiversity conservation.

The position will require the person to focus specifically on projects within the mountain realm, with a possibility of also focussing on the Arctic region should there be a need. We are seeking someone with excellent writing and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific information into accessible, easy reading format for decision makers.

The position is for one year with a possibility of extension depending on funding.

The position will require flexibility to take on existing and planned projects and tasks within the programme, while also seeking and developing new opportunities for GRID-Arendal, utilising your existing network and developing new networks where needed.

Main activities

  • Support the Vanishing Treasures (migratory species and climate change) project at GRID-Arendal with your expertise and skills
  • Support or lead new mountain projects where necessary and when opportunities arise
  • Co-develop new projects and concepts with the rest of the team, including proposal writing, fundraising, donor relations etc, including working with the UNEP Vienna office and other key mountain partners of GRID-Arendal
  • Support Arctic-related projects of the programme where necessary
  • Environmental assessment and science-policy work
  • Communications work including press releases, communication and dissemination activities
  • Organise workshops, meetings, capacity building and stakeholder engagement sessions
  • Project management, implementation, and results documentation
  • Strategic cooperation with partners, networking
  • Represent and promote the program at different national and international fora

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3-6 years of relevant professional experience
  • Relevant higher education and/or other skills related to mountain research, environmental management or other relevant fields
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, whether with local communities, high-ranking politicians, NGOs, researchers or other stakeholders
  • Experience with assessments, capacity building and awareness raising activities
  • Excellent English is a must, other relevant languages will be considered an asset
  • Strong and pleasant team player
  • High level of flexibility and adaptability to take up different tasks and responsibilities
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Commitment to travel when necessary
  • Experience with cartography is a plus

Compensation

Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary. An exciting position where you can contribute to the development of GRID-Arendal´s Mountain and Arctic work in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will be covered by our comprehensive insurance scheme and we offer flexible working hours. GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations.
